This month we celebrate national drink wine day! The benefits of drinking wine, especially red wine, have been well-established. The antioxidant benefits available in red wine can help protect the body against many free radical activities. Antioxidant nutrients are needed in higher amounts now more than ever before. This is because the sources of free radical activity from environment as well as our food and water are increasing steadily. These free radicals have the ability to mutate healthy cells, setting the stage for future problems both minor and major. Virtually all the chronic degenerative diseases facing society today have their origin or are promoted by excess inflammation, which comes in part, from free radical activity at the cellular level.

The antioxidants contained in red wine can help address this important need. Further, the light amount of alcohol in most wine also has benefit as it helps to transport the antioxidants throughout the body. We must remember that moderation is the key to all things in a healthy life. Excesses of food, drink, and other pleasures often result in compromised health. A glass of red wine after work or with an evening meal for most people, has a far greater benefit than detriment. Obviously, there are exceptions to this rule but for most of us the antioxidant benefit, along with the de-stress and relaxation that a nice red wine can provide can make winding down at the end of the day beneficial and more pleasurable.
